Me...Jane

McDonnell, P. (2011). Me…jane. New York, NY: Little, Brown and Company.

Notable Books for Children List, 2012

If the plot does not fit the traditional plot line, what plot line does the book illustrate?  Write a 5-6 sentence description of the book:

Me…Jane follows a nontraditional plot line as it tells the story of Dr. Jane Goodall’s childhood.  Jane loved to be outdoors.  She and her stuffed toy chimpanzee Jubilee studied and researched the plants and animals they found in her backyard.  They observed the miracle of a chicken laying an egg, climbed trees, and did various other things in their magical and wonderful world.  Like the character Jane in the book about Tarzan and the Apes, she also dreamed of a life in Africa, living with and helping all animals.  One day, Jane awakes and her dream has come true, and it shows an actual photograph of the real Dr. Jane Goodall as an adult in Africa reaching for a baby chimpanzee.

Picture books only (Was this a well illustrated book? Describe how it was or was not well-illustrated in 3 sentences.):  Author Patrick McDonnell illustrates Me…Jane in a very charming, childlike style, similar to Winnie the Pooh or Matilda.  Since the book is about Jane Goodall’s childhood, it only makes sense for the illustrations to be adorable and uncomplicated.  The book concludes with an actual photograph of Dr. Jane Goodall and a baby chimpanzee, which also makes sense as the use of a photograph shows that Jane is real and that her dream really did come true.
