Grandpa Green

Smith, L. (2011). Grandpa green. New York, NY: Roaring Book Press.

Notable Books for Children List, 2012

In Grandpa Green, a young boy tells the story of his great grandpa.  Grandpa Green grew up on a farm and wished to study horticulture, but instead he went to war, met his wife, married, and had kids and grand kids.  Even though he did not follow his childhood dream, he reveals his artistry and love for plants in his garden.  It contains multiple whimsical topiary trees which exhibit important memories throughout his life.  Grandpa struggles with forgetting things, so his garden helps him remember, but it also helps the boy learn about his great grandfather’s life story.

Of the books I have read that were written or illustrated by Lane Smith, this has been my favorite by far.  It is a moving story that explores the value of family history, memory loss, and love.  The words are accompanied by Lane Smith’s stunning illustrations, and I could not help but be impressed by his fanciful topiary trees.
