Lobel, A. (1971). Frog
and toad together. New York, NY: Harper Trophy.
Newbery Honor Book, 1973
Frog and Toad Together is the story of best friends Frog and Toad. It contains five chapters, each of which tell
a different account about the two main characters. In “The List,” Toad learns that it is okay to
deviate from his to-do list. With Frog’s
help, in “The Garden,” Toad learns that planting a garden is hard work and
requires much patience. Frog and Toad both
attempt to learn will power in “Cookies.”
In “Dragons and Giants,” Frog and Toad try to learn to be brave like the
dragons and giants in the books they read.
And in “The Dream,” Toad battles in a dream with arrogance and almost
loses Frog’s friendship, but when he awakens, he is thankful to find Frog there,
and they spend the day together.
Arnold Lobel’s book is a
timeless, simple to read story that teaches children about the value of
friendship. His artwork is first-rate
and entertaining, and it is easy to see why children and adults alike respond
so well to this story.
