Hatke, B. (2010). Zita
the spacegirl. New York, NY: First Second.
Notable Books for Children
List, 2012
In
Ben Hatke’s Zita the Spacegirl, the
main character Zita and her friend Joseph discover a red button poking out of a
hole caused by a meteoroid. When she
pushes the button, Joseph is sucked into a portal and kidnapped by the leaders
on another planet. Zita attempts to
rescue him, employing the help of friends she makes along the way. At the end of the story, Joseph is rescued,
but because the portal will only allow one person passage, Zita sends Joseph
through and stays behind, intending to take the long way home on her new friend
Piper’s ship.
This
book is written in a comic book format and contains good illustrations and
likable characters. The heroine is
female, a trait not typical of most comic books on the market today, but one
that is slowly on the rise. Hatke writes
this book, however, in a way that would appeal to an audience of both girls and
boys. Though this book was not
necessarily my taste, due to its slow beginning and because I do not particularly care for comic books, I realize the appeal it would have to a
younger audience whose love for comic books is only growing.
